I was invited to a conference in London to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of UNIFEM last week. Have you heard of them? Well, neither had I. They are in fact the United Nations Development Fund For Women. Unfortunately they seem to be a rather poor relation in comparison to UNICEF. Although, they do have the sponsorship of Nicole Kidman. And we heard that things are set to change for the better!
Despite their hereto tiny budget, they are responsible for some amazing initiatives around the world. Recognising the importance of education in the fight for equality they are using partners like Cisco to deliver IT training to women in middle eastern countries. One of the issues that particularly caught my attention was the fight to end Femal Gender Mutilation across the globe.
It was an interesting evening with Geoffrey Robertson QC as the main speaker. If you like watching Judge John Deed, then you would have been inspired by this man. He is a staunch supporter of human rights and women's rights. He has had an amazing career and has prosecuted some of the most heinous war criminals in the world.
